Year In Rainbow

Ack, such a rainy day the kind that put me back in bed after I decided to miss my yoga class, the kind that got my pants all wet and they dragged in the streets like I was a hoodlum . . .the kind that made me watch 3 hours of netflix, but also that kind that cleared up by 5pm and got me started on cleaning my room, and inspired by Glenn Marla and the fact that he asked me to be a part of December 19th’s “Love Muscle” at Happy Endings! I’m going to do some sort of “Blond Installation” as the celebration of the color yellow . . .I’m SO HAPPY to have a venue to express yellow in!

When I was feeling bummed about this whole attack business a week ago Precious Little told me,”A month of yellow will sure cheer you up, too.Keep your spirits up, beautiful lady.” I think that’s true, I’m finding yellow is creeping up on me in very cool ways . . .I’m excited about it!

I went to my first Right Rides volunteer meeting, and I already am scheduled to volunteer on December 1st! It feels good to be helping out in the community again!

After that I went for a burger with my cousin Yaacov(he’s basically my head webmaster, well he set up my word press account and keeps me in check!) While we were eating Micheal(of the Lords of Time) found me as he was walking by the restaurant, because he saw the rainbow!

Then I went to Bradford Scobie’s show Turkey Day with Pilgrim William at Joes Pub, this was another wonderfully crazy, dark, funny, your face hurt from laughing burlesque show!
I invited myself on a date with Brett and Jen or Neil and Clams, or Mr and Mrs Casino-O’Fortune. . .however you put it, it was a lovely time!

I only got one picture at the end when there was a “thanksgiving day parade” on stage.

And I got Batman, Pinkie Special took care to take the pictures, so that I would have great documentation of my excellent strike work for my stage managing portfolio!

After the security guard kicked us out claiming that we were,”hiding from her” how do performers hide, when the dressing room is actually their “office” of sort? She just wanted to go home, but she could have been a little nicer it’s not like we were humping blow up dolls or anything! Or taking beautiful pictures of Pinkie and Johnny, no nothing like that!

So I was saying after that, we went to The Cabin bar, because Taro works there and the would be open late. It was Dirty Martini’s birthday so we celebrated in style!

Today started with a movie shoot at Collective Unconscious for Reynard Roxbury and Greenwich Dreamtime productions where I got to do a burlesque interpretation of Bottom from Midsummer’s nights dream. Here’s Reynard behind the camera(she’s performing, filming and directing the movie!)

I really had a blast because Reynard made the donkey head gold so I prepped for the month of yellow, now I have a gold/yellow go-go outfit! It was a nice day spent with Julie Atlas Muz, she was also doing an act, playing the part of “Air.” Julie’s just so much fun to hang out with. We watched each other’s acts in the view finder, watching a live act on a tv is so different than watching it in reality! Julie is way over exposed in this picture, it’s crazy but she almost DOES look like air!

I like how this one came out too!

Julie asked me what kind of reactions I’ve been getting in rainbow, mainly people think I’m a clown. I did look like a clown today!

I had plans to meet up with a friend after the shoot, but she was sick so I wandered the streets before my 7pm rehearsal. I saw Michael Imperioli he played Christopher on the Sopranos, we looked at each other in the eye. I think he looked at me because I looked a little freakish still in my stage make-up and in the rainbow get-up, I looked at him because “he looked so familiar” then I realized he looked like Christopher from the Sopranos, may not have been him, but it might have been??

I went to look at a bike, I want a new one, Hanukkah is in a couple of weeks so I may treat myself!

Then I went to Veselka for some borcht! Yum!

And I had a really wonderful rehearsal for Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad, I’m really looking forward to doing the show! After rehearsals I went to say “hi” to Pinkie and she has some really cool rainbow fabric, we’re going to use it to do a duet . . . what we’ll do the rainbow only knows!!

I spent the day at home working on a costume for my “Bottom” act(that’s Bottom from “A Midsummer’s nights dream!”)

The costume is gold so the thread looked yellow-ish, it’s neat to be working in yellow already even though yellow isn’t for a couple of weeks!

I was suppose to go meet up with Jenny, Lea and Amy to practice Eccentric dancing, but after waiting 40 minutes for the train(in the freezing cold), I decided to go home . . .yes the cold can be defeating! I wished I’d gone, but what can you do!?

Anyway I came home and watched some star wars with Maceo and Sharon and went to bed, but not before I took some pictures of myself in my new outfit!

Worked again today, I was exhausted and actually too exhausted to remember to take a picture of myself!

So here I am around midnight, so technically it was today!

I’m surrounded by Gigaman, LaLa Valvaria, Lady Lucern and Minnie Tonka, Miss Tickle is took the picture!

After work , Mari met up with me for dinner at Cafe Habana, I just love that place and I love that the owner is really eco-friendly! Here’s Mari as I was walking her to the Bowery Poetry Club.

I taught a “How to please your man” class at the store and went home!

I woke up early today to go shopping for Trimmings for a moving I’m performing in on Monday and for some new Schlep Sisters Costumes.

A customer was wearing a rainbow scarf and I talked to him about how in the winter no one wears any color, yeah and it’s definitely winter already!
Gina Tai (friend who I met who used to live in my first house and would come back to visit) met up with me after work and we went to my house to eat delicious portobello mushroom sandwiches and get ready for my performance at the Slipper Room.

I had a great time go-go dancing(I usually do, except for the occasional time where I’m feeling to crappy to get the audience excited.) We did our “Schlepping through the Dessert” ie our Exodus act. I did my “You made me so very happy George Bush” act, it seemed to go over well!

It was a stormy morning, I took this picture because the leaves were filling the sky, it was a yellow storm!

I just want to take a moment to appreciate everyone who has been so supportive through out the last week and a half.

Lots of people have checked in with me to make sure I’m doing OK, today I even got a call from a childhood friend Marguerite who now lives in New York, I haven’t seen her in years.

I think finally I’m relaxing a little more and realizing that I scared the guy off, so I have that power. I’m also excited about volunteering for Right Rides. I highly suggest you got to the Volunteer meeting from 7-8pm on Tuesday in Brooklyn!

Anyway, mellow day, went to work and Claire(Babeland owner), gave me this cool note pad that has clouds and rainbows on it that she’s had since she was a kid! Also my mom sent me this amazing necklace that she made it’s a strand for every color in the year in rainbow, this picture doesn’t do it justice, but you’ll see it often I think!

“I have to admit it’s getting better, a little better all the time!” -Beatles

So, this whole color thing, guess what it’s actually helping me. It’s livening me up, energizing me, but in a wacky way. I thought the Rainbow months would be centering, neutral, but I think they can also be chaotic and energizing. Almost as if having ALL the color is making me loose focus. How can I tell I’m loosing focus? I’ve definitely had a cleaner room in the color months, and I use my room as a focused/relaxed/centered meter. I actually LOVE having a clean room, but when things get hectic, which feels often, the room cleaning goes to the gutter and I’m left with a chaotic pile of colorful clothing. How to find focus when you don’t have a day to find it? Focus through may colors? I don’t know, good question Darlinda!

I had breakfast today with Maceo while he was watching ET, and Elliot’s room had rainbow blinds, it was the coolest, most classic 80’s thing I’ve seen in a while! I couldn’t find a picture of it on the internet, but if you do, pass it my way, I’ll definitely post it!

Yesterday I worked, I’m working a lot lately since I have just traveled for two weeks. I got some bad news, my manager was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She is only 30, and had just started this Masters program at NYU. It’s intense, life is so short, we just have to live every day to the fullest and listen to our bodies and our hearts. Anyway if you want to channel some healing energy her way, she will definitely use it!

After work I had rehearsals with Alyssa for the next Schlep Sisters show on Friday at the Slipper Room. Alyssa was sick, but gave the rehearsal a lot even though she was sick!

I then met Morty Diamond,

one of the great inspirations for this project and we went(after getting a little lost) to Happy Endings for Glenn Marla and Sequinette’s party Love Muscle I’d say it was a smashing success, it was definitely a very loving party, lots of people I enjoy seeing and LOVE were there. I appreciate Glenn and Sequinette for creating the loving environment!

Zhenesse did a really great installation performance, it was super inspiring, though I desperately wanted to interact with her and it wasn’t an interactive piece!

The day started off with a great yoga class with my teacher Anne. She just very intuitive. Everyone complimented me on my rainbow outfit, it never ceases to amaze me how excited people get about color! I do have to say that the color has been comforting. Even though I’ve been down lately it’s helping to bring me up or at least to bring me back to myself. Also the Yoga helps too!

My house mates Sharon and Maceo gave me this heart shaped/rainbow key chain. It was so sweet because Maceo (who’s 3 years old) really wanted to give it to me so Sharon had to wait until I was home and when Maceo was awake. It’s just a comforting thing, it reminds me of what a supportive household I live in, and I mean rainbows and hearts you just can’t go wrong!

I purchased Radio Heads “In Rainbow” and I actually enjoyed it! I haven’t really listened to Radio Head since their album came out in the 1990’s I was in middle school and I owned a cassette! I heard about their pay-what-you-will album on NPR then the other day Amber Ray reminded me about the album! I do enjoy it and I think it’s pretty cool that you can download it for whatever price you want!

Today was hard, I just didn’t feel like leaving the house today. I’m tired of being scared on the train, I’m tired of taking taxi cabs home, I’m tired of loosing my cell phone in the said taxi cabs, I’m just tired of living in a world where you have to be afraid . . .I said I wanted to live in awareness . . .but now I’m just paranoid . . .it makes me feel sick!

It’s like I want to be invisible, but I can’t because well I’m dressed in rainbow all the time. I’ll have a day off one of these days, but I just need a mental day off, hmm.

Anyway . . .here’s what this looks like . . .yes folks I’m home and in a blue bathrobe .. . forgot to take a picture in my rainbow clothes . . . . you’ll see me and my messy room . . .uhg!

Well, the day started at Earl Dax and La John Joseph’s house. La John Joseph had an event with one of the Cockettes performing in it! I of course missed it because I was at Victoria, but I wanted to say hello so I stopped by!

We sat around and chatted till 6am, and I figured I’d better go home and get some sleep, because I was falling asleep!

I woke up around 10am and found that Sara my roommate had put up a day of the dead alter for her friend Aura Estrada who had died recently. It’s such a beautiful and colorful tradition. I think that death shouldn’t be all black, that this alter is so wonderful because it honors the colors of life rather than the darkness of death.
