I was at home for most of the day watching dance videos on youtube and relaxing, I was suppose to go to the Dyke March, but I wasn’t feeling so hot, yes my moon was full and the cramps were abundant, so dressing up and going out in the rain was on the bottom of my “to do list”. Then I left the house around 9:30pm to teach a workshop for Babeland. On the way there I was riding down Vernon and this guy said,”Don’t be afraid,I like white people!” I wanted say, “I like all people!” then I was riding down Throop this guy pulls up to me and says “your driving 25 miles an hour!”
Ok, when I ride my bike at night, I have my magenta helmut with reflective tape all over it, and a light on it, I also wear an orange reflective vest. I don’t look the sexiest, but I do prevent unwanted sexual comments and any accidents from invisibility. But what I do get is people totally weirded out by how dorky I look. I mean a helmet AND a protective vest, how dorky can you get? So I’m parking my bike on Rivington street and I hear from across the street, these people commenting on my outfit, like I’m trying to be sexy or something. Then as I’m unlocking my bike to go home, I get more comments from these people getting into a cab, as I ride away I say, “I have ears you know!”
Then to top it off on my way home, I’m stopped at a stop light and these kids throw a rock at me. It pissed me off so I gave them a mean look, and he said,”oh, the white lady’s gonna snitch on me.” I said, “It’s not because I’m white, you’re just being an idiot kid!” Come on, when I was eleven this kid Ian used to kick rocks on me when we were walking home from the bus, it’s just so weird, people were just wonky today!
